Porsche 997 Carrera S Cabriolet: Long term test
Purchased in the late spring of 2006 my Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, type 997, will soon give way to her replacement. It is time to take stock of 6 years and about 70,000 km, with one of the best sports cars today.
A feature of recent Porsche is the long list of available options. Determine the best combination took me time. Several visits to four concessions Porsche U.S. provided well in exposure models have allowed me to complete my setup. A number of must-produced by it. The first and most important to me is the choice of adaptive sports seats (option P01), as comfortable as flattering to the eye, especially on a convertible. Then the thick steering wheel rim (optional XPA) also seems necessary, it offers a better grip, I found the standard steering wheel too late to seem outdated. Finally, the reducing system of the pedal stroke speed (option XCZ) is essential to my eyes on this model, we will return. For the rest, there are ways to customize excessive, I opted for the leather interior and a carbon finish.
I have not chosen 4S version because I did not intend to use it in bad weather, and as the extra weight that the reduced capacity of the trunk have convinced me that 2S would be ideal. This Carrera was to ensure a succession of difficult Ferrari F360 Modena car as "fun." The specifications included among others the possibility of daily use, unreasonable with the Ferrari and a source of frustration. The choice of the 911 convertible was obvious to me after reading an advertisement in the British magazine EVO showing behavior very close to the coupe version. That would be my first gig, my hope is that the effect would offset the inevitable outdoor drop driving experience compared to the Italian. This hope will prove completely filled after installation of the sports exhaust system (PES Porsche Sports Exhaust) I did not initially selected.
This Porsche has become my main car in mid-March to late November. It remains a car mat do not attract the special attention in all the circumstances of everyday use. The boot easily accommodates two suitcases "banding at hand" over a soft bag or suitcase with a small photo equipment, video and computer. A suitcase of medium size (60 liters) will also find its place. The adult passenger in the rear is a bit more problematic, but I happened to have on trips of one one adult in the back in precarious conditions but certainly acceptable. A 911 is considered as a two-seater, without problems of carrying luggage.
A roll is first the pleasure of sitting all day in the bucket of a sports car. The qualities of the car are significant all the time, no particular problem to report in all situations of current traffic. The effect of reduced stiffness of the cabriolet is barely noticeable, it is only in big upheavals that have support feel the difference with a cut. The control gear box with gear racing is close to perfect, in fact it is the trinomial box control, calibration of the clutch pedal and brake pedal placement and accelerator that is ideal. Difficult to find an optimal design of driving a car with manual transmission. The return springs, and placement of different races are great pedals. Note that the command to reduced stroke has not been a problem, you have certainly sometimes go through the second before the first snap at a standstill, but this is rare. The sound insulation hood closed is naturally worse than on a coupe, especially on wet roads where the sound of splashing water is present. Driving behavior typical of the 911 is of course preserved in this convertible.
