Deadly inter-ethnic clashes that erupted in Kyrgyzstan last week has forced at least 400,000 people to leave their country or their home, the UN said Thursday.
"According to the latest estimates of UN agencies, there are at least 400 000 refugees or displaced persons," said a spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Elisabeth Byrs told AFP.
About 100,000 people have sought refuge in neighboring Uzbekistan, which count only adults, he added. According Byrs, UN estimates about the number of displaced people in Kyrgyzstan are now "approximately 300,000 people."
Ethnic clashes between Kyrgyz and Uzbek community in Kyrgyzstan has caused at least 191 people were killed and nearly 2000 people were injured, according to the government.
The UN says, 9,000 people could cross the border between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, Wednesday, because the border remains open merkipun restrictions announced by local government.
Most of them into the Andijan region, Fergana and Namangan in eastern Uzbekistan. "The largest number of refugees concentrated in 48 temporary camps in the Andijan region," said Byrs.
Meanwhile, a number of countries also had to evacuate their citizens from the city of Osh, Jalalabad and surrounding areas in southern Kyrgyzstan where ethnic unrest occurred, such as China, Pakistan, India and Turkey.
UN aid flights carrying 40 tonnes of aid each have started arriving in Andijan, Wednesday, with all six flights will be arriving on the weekend, according to the office of UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Aid agencies have also sent seven trucks loaded with boxes of material-emergency health care, while the team Medecins Sans Frontiers (Doctors without Borders, MSF) to assess the needs in Uzbekistan.
Help the Red Cross has also reached Andijan, Wednesday, which includes 40 tons of high-energy biscuits. "It is very mengejutkana is cruel acts, rape, violence against children and helpless people," said Byrs.
The UN is also concerned about displaced people in Kyrgyzstan are struggling to reach medical care.
