UK Refuses to Follow US Lead in Arms Sales Suspension to Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

SEOBLOGREEN - In a statement on Sunday, UK Foreign Minister David Cameron expressed his refusal to follow the United States' decision to suspend arms sales to Israel, which insists on carrying out military operations in Rafah, southern Gaza.

Despite rejecting Israel's plans to attack Rafah, Cameron argued in an interview with BBC local media that suspending arms sales to Israel would only "strengthen Hamas further."

He mentioned that the UK only supplies one percent of Israel's total arms, thus implying that delaying arms sales would have no significant impact.

Instead, Cameron reiterated the importance of a more comprehensive plan to ensure the safety of Palestinian civilians if Israel's military operation continues.

The British Foreign Minister also stated that the UK's position on the Israel-Palestine conflict is not always aligned with that of the US.

He emphasized that the UK will continue to push for diplomatic measures to pressure Israel while increasing humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza.

The conflict in Gaza, which has been ongoing since October 7, 2023, has resulted in over 35,000 Palestinian casualties, mostly women and children.

Israel's military aggression has displaced 85 percent of Gaza's population, destroyed 60 percent of its infrastructure, and caused severe shortages of food, clean water, and medicine.

Israel has persisted in its operations in Rafah, despite claims of limited scope, while 1.4 million Palestinians remain displaced from the ongoing conflict in the city.

Israeli forces have also seized control of the Rafah border crossing on the Palestinian side, a crucial entry point for humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued its initial ruling on January 26, ordering Israel to halt genocide and work to improve humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Last Friday,

South Africa also called on the ICJ to issue an additional ruling instructing Israel to withdraw its forces from Rafah.***
