Earth Day, a daily challenge
The Earth Day Québec unveiled Tuesday the list of activities to be organized around the 22 April, a date chosen to remind everyone that doing to the planet is a daily responsibility.
"It's a question that I was often asked: what do you do the remaining 364 days?" Pierre Lussier, executive vice president of Earth Day Quebec, do not fail to recall with humor the confusion between the celebrations of 22 April and the name of his organization.
Yet it is activated more than one day per year.
"Since the birth of the association, in 1995, certainly we will take care of the celebrations, but, increasingly, we are implementing programs that sustain all year positive initiatives on the environment," says Mr. Lussier, who nevertheless cut a cake to mark the launch of activities from April 22.
The peculiarity of the organization lies in the establishment of partnerships involving the private sector. "Companies are helping us raise funds and increase our visibility, and in return we help them implement programs to improve their practices," says the conductor motion.
Three companies share and the prestigious title of major partners. The TD Friends of the Environment, IGA and Quebecor are committed to make available to the Earth Day resources to develop new initiatives.
Earth Day, a daily challenge
For example, vendors have invested in IGA distribution barrels recovery of rainwater saving drinking water. On his side, Quebecor has implemented green ambassadors in these subsidiaries. These people are responsible for promoting more responsible behavior of employees as part of their work.
This year the focus is on the effects of environment on health, but not only. "Health care institutions themselves cause problems, said Fiona Hanley, nurse and member of the Board of Synergy Health and Environment. They are open 365 days a year, day and night, they produce a lot of waste and many of them are not recycled. So we try to monitor the consumption and educate staff, because, as we always say, better safe than sorry. "
