Barcelona Disallow Use Burka (Robe)

Barcelona became the first major city in Spain, which banned the use of robes, which are usually subject to some of the Muslim women, in public places. Prohibition Burka dress (burqa), niqab, or other clothing that covers the entire body is also applicable in the market and library.

Thus the new policy the Government of Barcelona, Tuesday, June 15, 2010. The rule will apply after the summer or in the second half of this year, but the dates are not presented further.

"Barcelona banned the use of burqa, niqab, and other clothing that complicate the identification of individuals in all public installations in this city," the statement said, as quoted from the pages of Al Jazeera television station.

Alberto Fernandez, the city government officials and members of the Popular Party, the conservative wing, said that wearing the burqa and niqab undermine women's dignity and freedom.

"Actually, the new rules is still half-half because in addition to ban the burqa and the niqab in public places, it is necessary also to apply the same in the streets," added Fernandez.

Two small towns in Spain, Lerida and El Vendrell, has adopted a similar rule. Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain with around 1.4 million Muslims live in the cities that fell into the autonomous region of Catalonia.

Ban the use of robes are not new in Europe. Last month, France approved legislation banning the use of such clothing in public places. Belgian lower house also voted to prohibit the use of the veil that covered nearly the entire female body.
