Trade Deficit with China Worrying

VIVAnews - The deficit of Indonesian trade balance has aroused concerns over the domestic industry. Provided the non-oil and gas trade balance amongst countries having free trade agreements, there is a growing concern over the deficit in Indonesian trade balance, especially with China.

"The most worrying one is with China," said Chief of Industry Development and Research Agency of the Industry Ministry, Dedi Mulyadi, in Jakarta today, September 2.

Between January and July, the non-oil and gas import from China worth US$10.97 billion, while Indonesian export to China was only at US$6.9 billion. "The uncontrolled import afffects the domestic products," he said.

In addition to China, other countries that have signed the free trade agreement and recorded deficit include Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and Australia.

"This affects the domestic industry. If we do nothing, import will tend to rise," he said.

According to Dedi, there are two ways of blocking more import. First, the Indonesian national standards must be set because it is an effective way of preventing foreign goods from being imported rapidly. Second, there must be a movement which aims at boosting people's desire to buy Indonesian products.
