John McCluskey and Casslyn Welch manhunt ends in capture after tip-off

An Arizona prison escapee and his alleged accomplice have been captured after a manhunt that has been going on for the last three weeks. The pair, John McCluskey and Casslyn Mae Welch, who some had likened to a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, were arrested at a campsite in Arizona following a tip-off from a park ranger.

According to U.S Marshal David Gonzales, an unattended fire was noticed along with a car in some trees at the campground at the Apache and Sitgreaves National Forests in Springerville, Arizona, and a SWAT team was called to the site after a license plate check on the car revealed it matched a vehicle recently stolen in New Mexico, according to Ed Payne over on CNN. McCluskey and Welch are suspected in the killings of a couple near the scene of the car theft.

Gonzales, referring to the SWAT team from the Apache County Sheriff’s Department moving in said, “Once they felt they had the opportunity, they rushed in very quickly … so they couldn’t get to their weapons.” Apparently Welch did attempt to grab her gun but was restrained before it could be used, while McCluskey did fire at a deputy.

Meanwhile Lt. Col. Steve Campbell from the Arizona Department of Public Safety spoke of the relief of the capture saying, “”We’re fortunate to have these individuals in custody without further loss of life.” Allegedly Welch had helped McCluskey, serving a sentence for second-degree murder, along with fellow prisoners Tracy Province and Daniel Renwick, to escape from prison although Province and Renwick had already been taken back into custody.
